5 Reasons Why Your Furniture Isn’t Selling In April

If your DIY and flipped furniture isn’t selling in April, you’re not the only one facing this struggle. April might seem like just another month, but it brings it own unique challenges for individuals looking to sell furniture. Before you give up, check out the list below (and read to the bottom for my selling tips!). Here are the top 5 reasons your furniture might not be selling in April:

1. Spring breaks: they’re either traveling or rebuilding their budgets.

Travel has gotten a lot more expensive over the last year, and you can definitely feel the effects of that in April. Families are having to cut back on other spending to plan for or recoup budgets from spring break vacations. Spending money on items that aren’t “necessary” in April is one way to help save money, so purchasing a new furniture item might not be a priority. Don’t give up hope, though. Everyone returns to discretionary spending eventually, and the line between what people want and what they need will become much thinner.

2. Spring cleaning has people getting rid of items, not purchasing them.

The spring cleaning bug is REAL (it even hits my house!). With shows pushing minimalism and ultra-clean organization styles, people might not be ready to put things back into their house after purging. As families start to gather more clutter, they will eventually need a place to store items, and your furniture will be ready and waiting!

3. April showers might bring May flowers, but it doesn’t make for good furniture weather.

No matter where you are, April is notorious for an increased amount of rainfall. Rain = not great furniture-moving weather. People might be more hesitant to try to pick up furniture in bad weather, especially if they are larger pieces that require a truck. Try to focus on selling smaller items this month (think, what can fit in a car?).

4. April is tax month, and if you don’t get a return, you’re probably on a tighter budget right now.

I can’t think of April without thinking of tax day. Hopefully, your potential buyers will get a refund and want to splurge on furniture, but unfortunately, many families and individuals have to pay. As a result, budgets can be pretty tight in April (which means no room for furniture spending).

5. The weather is warming, and styles are changing.

Although April brings rain, it also brings warmer weather in a lot of areas! Styles are changing as the weather warms up, though, so different colors and designs may be getting more popular. Instead of scrapping your piece completely, keep an eye on what’s popular this spring. Can you re-paint or switch out the wallpaper accent you used?
