How to Haggle and Negotiate on Facebook Marketplace (Without Angering The Seller)

Facebook Marketplace is a fantastic platform to find great deals, but sometimes you may want to pay a smaller price. Negotiating on this platform requires strategy to ensure you don't insult or anger the seller (which means you lose the item altogether). In this blog, I’ll explore effective strategies for negotiating on Facebook Marketplace, all while maintaining respect and courtesy. I’ve used these strategies as a buyer and given into these strategies as a seller. So, trust me… they work!

1. Speak to Them Like a Person

Avoid sending automated or short messages like "Is this available?” or “Will u take $5?" Start the conversation with a friendly greeting, and ask about the item politely. Show genuine interest in their listing, as this sets a positive tone for negotiation. Remember— this is a person, not a robot.

2. Make a Reasonable Offer (Don’t ask for their lowest price.)

When making an offer, always consider the fair market value of the item. If the seller is asking $100, don't offer $10; this could come across as disrespectful. The closer your offer is to a reasonable price, the better your chances of success. If the item is priced lower, you may be able to get a higher percentage off.

3. Compliment the Item and Express Your Interest

Complimenting the item and explaining how you intend to use and cherish it makes sellers view you as a human being who would love the item just as they did. Sellers appreciate knowing their item is valued and wanted. A little flattery can go a long way… and a LOT further than saying “It’s not worth what you’re asking.”

4. Skip the Sob Story

While it's tempting to share personal hardships, avoid sob stories. You don't know the seller's situation, and they may be in need of the money themselves. Keep the conversation focused on the item and the price. Not to mention, as a seller, I receive these messages all the time. They make me very uncomfortable.. especially when the item is a pretty lamp or expensive lawn chair. Baby formula is a different story. (PS: did you know listing some items can get you banned from Facebook Marketplace? This blog explains rules you may not know!)

5. Offer Immediate Pick Up

Show your commitment to the purchase by offering to pick up the item immediately. Sellers are more likely to accept an offer if they know you're on your way. This demonstrates that you're serious about the transaction.

6. Send a Deposit (with Caution)

If you can't pick up right away, consider offering a deposit to secure the item. However, be cautious about sending money, as there are fake sellers and scammers out there. Only send a deposit when you're confident it's a legitimate deal. Before you send payment, read this blog about why scammers often require Zelle.

7. Be Respectful If They Decline or Leave You on Read

Sometimes sellers may decline your offer or not respond. Don't take it personally. Respect their decision and avoid sending multiple follow-up messages. They might be considering other offers or may not be interested in negotiating.

8. Follow Up If It's Still Available

If the item is still available after a few days, consider following up with the seller. This can show your continued interest and may lead to a more favorable response. As a seller, I’ve gotten desperate and given major discounts on items I needed gone quickly. Again, offering immediate pick up can go a long way.

9. Explain Why You're Offering Less

When offering a lower price, explain your reasoning in a non-whiny or insulting way. Again.. no sob stories. For example, you could say, "Hi, Seller! I know you're asking $100 for this piece. It's beautiful and I'm dreaming of having it in my living room. However, I'd want to replace that chipped glass, which would run me about $20. Would you be willing to lower the price? No worries if not!"

Conclusion

Learning the keys to haggling and negotiation on Facebook Marketplace can help you find fantastic deals while maintaining a respectful and courteous attitude toward sellers. Remember, effective communication and showing genuine interest can go a long way in securing the items you desire at the right price.
