My Tips For A Trip To Family Thrift Outlet in Fort Worth, Texas

I love to do most of my thrift shopping at the Family Thrift Outlet in Fort Worth, Texas. This store prices every single item in the store the same price and it fluctuates by the day of the week. Even on the MOST expensive day, the prices per item is only $2.25. I don’t think you could find any pieces of clothing at similar thrift stores for less than $3. On Wednesday, every item is 25 cents. For a dollar you can get a top, bottom, purse and shoes. Tell me a better deal. I’ll wait.

Go on Thursday if you want to get the best condition name-brand clothing.

Get there at least an hour early! It is complete chaos on Thursday because that is when they bring in fresh, new items.

Go on Wednesday if you want to get the cheapest possible clothing available.

This is going to be pretty bottom of the barrel selection, but you can still find some treasures if you are willing to hunt. Don’t worry— there are still THOUSANDS of items.

Although there are categories on the wall that insinuate organization, there is no organization at all.

You will find onesies mixed in with winter coats, mixed in with mens clothes, mixed in with prom dresses. If you have the time, look at all the racks because you might find something out of place!

There is a very minimal selection of baby, kids, and mens clothing.

The primary offering is women’s clothing in all sizes! There are a few items in some of those other categories, but not enough to make a special trip if those are what you are looking for.

It is not categorized by size.

All of the sizes are mixed in together, so it’s important that you have plenty of time to look through each piece of clothing!

They have a very large selection of plus size clothing.

If you are looking for plus sizes, this is the store for you! It is easier to find XS, S, and anything XL and up! Medium and large are the hardest to find.

They sell purses and shoes too!

You might need to go on the first day because every time I’ve been it’s been damaged, dirty items. Based on the other items I’ve found though, you should be able to find some good stuff.

There are bins at the front, but I’ve never been brave enough to go through them.

If you have the time, I’m sure you can find some great treasures in them!

I would recommend bringing Germ-X and maybe even gloves.

Brutal honesty… this store can be pretty dirty. Some clothing is stained and they are clearly not washed prior to being hung on the rack. For the price, can you blame them? Just be mindful of germs and wash your hands when you leave.

Leave hangers on the rack or you’ll have to take them all off before checkout.

There are signs on the walls that say this, but my first time I didn’t notice. They do not let you check out with hangers, so if you get in line with your items still on you’ll have to spend a few minutes taking them all off. Just leave the hangers on the rack to save yourself some time!

Most employees do not speak English, they only speak Spanish.

But this isn’t a huge deal! Use context clues to figure out what they’re saying if you need to ask for help, but also make sure to read the signs on the walls because they state all of the “rules” you need to follow to shop there.

They take card, no matter how small the purchase.

You can pay with cash too, but don’t worry if your total is only 75 cents and you need to use a card!

It’s not in a super safe area.

I LOVE Fort Worth, but some areas are a little more dangerous than others. While shopping here, lock your car and do not leave anything valuable inside. Be mindful of who is around you! If possible, go with a friend to avoid being alone in the parking lot. I haven’t had any issues with crime while going, but I just want to nudge everyone to be mindful.

The store can be very busy on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The slowest time that I’ve seen was Friday morning when I think I was the only person in the store. If you hate large crowds, avoid these two days.

I strongly recommend leaving kids at home.

Look, I’ll be honest… the floor is nasty. You do not want your children to touch it (and they inevitably will!) The store also gets crazy with other kids running around, people pushing carts around, and you will be focusing on inspecting the clothing for size, damage, etc. and won’t be able to pay close attention to your kids.

There is no changing room available to try things on.

I would wear layers so you can put clothes on over your outfit so you can try things on if you need to!

Family Thrift Center is NOT the same as Family Thrift Outlet.

they have an app, but it doesnt work at the outlet. the outlet takes all of the rejects from the centers that are typically priced much higher. don’t go to family thrift center and expect it to be the same pricing at the outlet.

This is a GIANT thrift store. It would take hours to go through all of the racks, and while most of us don’t have that kind of time, it is 100% worth it to find the best deals. I’ve found designer clothing (even on discount day!) with just a little bit of digging.
