9 Easy Life Hacks for Flipping Furniture

I started upcycling and flipping furniture in 2020. Since starting, I’ve learned many ways to save time and money when it comes to refurbishing dressers, end tables, chairs— you name it! Some of these hacks may require an Amazon order, but you may already have a few of these tools on hand. Let’s dive into some of my favorite hacks.

1. Oven Cleaner for Stripping Finishes

It may only work about 10% of the time, but when it does.. it’s a GAME CHANGER. Oven cleaner, like this brand from Amazon, can strip off old varnish and stain in seconds. It tends to only work on old, dark finishes. I always try it before stripping or sanding. It’s a controversial techinque, because oven cleaner is considered toxic. However… stripper isn’t exactly safe or healthy either. So consult your doctor, wear gloves/a mask, and decide for yourself. This technique won’t work on paint.

2. Carbide Stripper for Removing Topcoats

This Carbide Stripper from Amazon has so many potential uses. My personal favorite is for removing topcoats and varnishes. You grab the handle and scrape it across the surface. The blade removes the top layer (and maybe even the 2nd or 3rd). This can save time when you will be stripping or sanding something with thick layers.

3. Stainless Steel Wool Scrubbers for Stripping Details

Put down whatever tool you’re using to strip details on furniture… these scrubbers from Amazon will blow your mind. They can be rinsed out after use. They scrub into the smallest of details and cover far more surface area than most tools will.

4. Painting to Restore Rattan Furniture

It’s nearly impossible to rebuild damaged rattan furniture. However, this blog details how I used paint to transform a damaged, faded rattan coffee table into a beautiful, like-new piece of furniture.

5. Burlap Instead of Cane

When you’re wanting the look of cane, but feel overwhelmed by finding a supplier (or paying the price), burlap from Amazon is an excellent substitute. It looks modern and high quality, but it’s more affordable and easier to attach.

6. Adjustable Hardware That Fits Any Hole Distance

These handles blew my mind. You know the frustration of needing a handle size that apparently only exists if you buy for $50/handle on Etsy? The worst. Instead, order adjustable handles on Amazon. The screw holes can slide on the bar so they will fit any hole distance. Genius!

7. SurfPrep Sander for Edges and Details

You can use promo code maggie10 to save some money, but keep in mind this tool is a true investment. It’s a high quality sander that can be used on curves, corners, edges, and hard-to-reach areas.

8. Scrape Instead Of Prepping Glass

I used to dread painting mirrors, windows, and cabinets with glass doors, because I despise prepping with tape. However, now I spray paint or brush right over the glass. Shortly after it dries, I use my scraper to scratch it off. Don’t worry, just be careful and you won’t scratch the glass.

9. Heavy Furniture Movers

If you’re working solo, you may need help moving/lifting some of the heavier pieces of furniture. I’ve been known to drop (and subsequently break) heavy furniture trying to lift it myself. Instead of risking it, just order this kit and save yourself from the back pain.
