How To DIY A Colorful Kids Room On A Budget

If you’re looking for a step-by-step guide to creating a room that looks both clean and fun— you’ve found it. I did this project in just 3 days, and it looks like a totally different room. The rainbow bursts of color are perfect for kids of all ages in bedrooms or playrooms. This article contains affiliate links.

Step 1. Start with a blank canvas.

I really recommend white paint! If it’s a darker room, I would do a white with slight yellow undertones so it doesn’t end up feeling like a hospital room. But always, always, ALWAYS, try samples before committing.

Step 2. Switch out the light.

This is the focal point of the room. I used this pink chandelier from Amazon, but it comes in many colors. Most people subconsciously glance up at the light fixture. It can either be forgettable… or it can be the one thing that makes your room REALLY pop.

Step 3. Spice up the ceiling.

I used these peel and stick confetti pieces. The ceiling was textured (felt like a light popcorn texture) and they stayed in place with no problems. If you’re patient and have stronger arm muscles than I do, you may want to paint pretty designs or even a large rainbow instead.

Step 4. Have fun with the furniture!

It’s not easy to find colorful furniture. I chose to paint each of mine by hand. If you want to learn how, click here and I’ll teach you. If you’re a little too busy, you may want to buy one of the fun pieces below. Click each photo to open the link!

Step 5. Use a rug.

I chose this one, because it was neutral yet colorful. It didn’t overwhelm the room, but it warmed up the space and helped neutralize the rainbow theme. Odds are that you don’t have a colorful floor. That’s okay! Too much can take away from the overall theme. A rug adds the perfect amount of color to the floor.

Step 6. Don’t let the toys overwhelm the room.

Utilize storage and take advantage of the room makeover to declutter. Tacky toys can make the entire them go from fun and clean to cluttered and tacky. Please don’t take away all of your kids’ favorite toys! Instead, find some colorful storage like this one on Amazon!

Step 7. Grab some new bedding.

I personally purchased this rainbow crib sheet and this fluffy white comforter. This isn’t a necessity, but new bedding always makes a room feel truly refreshed and more exciting. If your room is already sporting a lot of color, it’s totally fine to go with white bedding.

Step 8. Walls, walls, walls!

This room would have been SO bland without wall art and beautifully bold curtains. I mixed these bold art canvases with this set of art. I added these turquoise curtains and this gold curtain rod for the final pop.

Step 9. Step back and look at what you created!

Then relish in the true joy your kids will experience when they see their new room. Soak up the organized beauty. If your kids are anything like mine.. it’ll only be picture perfect for about 5 more minutes.

I hope this blog (and these photos) inspire your next project. It’s time to use more color in our homes and especially around our kids. I love neutral decor, but it can be such a fun challenge to step outside of my comfort zone. I have NEVER done a room like this before. So, have I convinced you? Here’s the link to every single item I used in this room makeover.
